Barnsley expelled from FA Cup after playing an ineligible player in the first-round replay. This information was last updated on November 22, 2023, and can be found in the Barnsley section. There have been 1152 comments on this matter.
Barnsley has been disqualified from the FA Cup because they played a player who was not eligible to participate in their first-round replay victory against non-league Horsham.
The team from the seventh division will be facing Sutton United, a team from League Two, in the second round.
Last week, the Tykes from League One emerged victorious in the replay with a score of 3-0, following a 3-3 draw in the first match at Oakwell.
On the club website, they expressed their apologies to their fans, players, and staff for the unfortunate mistake.
Barnsley has chosen not to disclose the player's name. However, according to the rules set by the Football Association, only players who are eligible for the first FA Cup match are allowed to participate in a replay.
Aiden Marsh, who plays as a forward, had temporarily joined York City, a team in the National League, when the initial game occurred on 3 November. However, he was called back to his original team just three days later. On 14 November, the 20-year-old began playing in the rematch that took place in West Sussex.
Barnsley's statement emphasized that the mistake, even though it was not intentional, does not meet the exceptional standards they have established at the club and is not what their supporters deserve.
"We have already completed a thorough investigation within our organization and have implemented measures to prevent any recurrence of this incident in the future."
Barnsley has the option to challenge the decision, but the Tykes have stated that they have agreed with the decision
As a result of the ruling, Horsham, a team from the Isthmian League Premier Division, will have the opportunity to compete in the second round of the FA Cup. This achievement marks only the second time in their history that Horsh
During an interview with BBC Radio Surrey, Kevin Borrett, the chairman of Horsham, expressed his satisfaction for the success of their club. He also expressed his sympathy towards Barnsley and acknowledged the disappointment their supporters must be feeling. Borrett genuinely wished them the best for the future.
Over the weekend, I engaged in multiple conversations with the Barnsley chair regarding their efforts in preparing a response to the FA charge.
I believe that both clubs have had a great relationship in both matches, and the supporters have also found common ground on a few matters. This has resulted in a strong connection between them.
He further commented: "We shouldn't underestimate Sutton. They are a formidable team, being part of the league. So when we play against them, we might be considered the underdogs, but we will approach the game with the mindset that it is an opportunity to emerge victorious.
I believe Sutton will not underestimate the importance of this game.
In 2006, Bury became the most recent club to be expelled from the competition before or during the first round. This happened because they played Stephen Turnbull, a loanee from Hartlepool, without the necessary authorization during a second-round replay match against Chester.
Chester was given back their position and later suffered a defeat against Ipswich in a match that took place in the third round replay.
In the seasons of 2010-11 and 2012-13, Droylsden and Bradford City were initially disqualified but were later reinstated following an appeal.
It is quite puzzling and difficult to understand how the error could have occurred. This is the analysis provided by Andy Giddings from BBC Radio Sheffield.
Although administrative errors like this are not uncommon in football, it is still puzzling why they occur in the first place. The fans, especially those who attended the replay in Horsham, as well as some club officials, including the person responsible, understandably feel angry and embarrassed.
However, it is important to acknowledge that Barnsley demonstrated cooperation with the FA's investigation, took responsibility for their actions, and committed to preventing such errors in the future. There are limited options available in such situations, but at least the matter was resolved promptly.
Best wishes to Horsham as they face Sutton in their upcoming match. It is likely that the victorious team will secure a highly desirable match in the third round of the FA Cup, which may result in further criticism for the Reds.
