Barnsley Expelled from FA Cup for Fielding Ineligible Player: What Went Wrong?

Barnsley has been disqualified from the FA Cup due to the use of an ineligible player during a first-round replay. This decision was made recently, on November 22, 2023.

Barnsley's participation in the FA Cup has been disqualified due to their use of a player who was not eligible to play in their first-round replay victory against Horsham, a non-league team.

The team from the seventh division will face Sutton United, who are in League Two, in the second round.

Last week, the Tykes from League One emerged victorious in the replay with a 3-0 win, following a 3-3 draw in the first match at Oakwell.

On the club's official website, they expressed their apologies to their fans, players, and staff for the unfortunate mistake.

Barnsley has not disclosed the player's identity, but the Football Association has regulations that state only players who are qualified for the first FA Cup match can participate in a replay.

Aiden Marsh, who plays as a forward, was temporarily sent to York City, a team in the National League. During his loan period, the first game occurred on 3 November, but he was called back just three days later. Later on, Marsh started in the replay match that took place in West Sussex on 14 November.

Barnsley's statement acknowledged that the mistake made, even though it was not deliberate, does not meet the club's high standards and is not what the fans deserve.

"We have already completed a thorough internal inquiry and have subsequently implemented measures to guarantee that this incident will never reoccur."

Barnsley has the option to challenge the decision, but the Tykes have stated that they have agreed with the decision

As a result of the decision, Horsham, a team from the Isthmian League Premier Division, will have the opportunity to compete in the second round of the FA Cup for the second time ever.

Kevin Borrett, the chairman of Horsham, expressed his satisfaction for his club's success. He also conveyed his sympathy towards Barnsley and acknowledged the distress their supporters must be feeling. He wished them well in their future endeavors.

Over the weekend, I had several discussions with the Barnsley chair as they were getting ready to respond to the FA charge.

"I believe that the clubs have had a great relationship throughout both matches, and the supporters have also found common ground on a few matters, creating a genuine connection between them."

He further commented that Sutton should be acknowledged for their strength as a team, considering they belong to a higher league. Despite being seen as the underdogs, they will approach the game with a determined mindset, believing that victory is possible.

I believe Sutton will not underestimate the importance of this game.

In 2006, Bury was the most recent club to be kicked out of the competition during the first round or later. This happened because they played Stephen Turnbull, who was on loan from Hartlepool, in a second-round replay against Chester without the necessary permission.

Chester was given another chance to play and ended up losing to Ipswich in a match that took place after the third round.

In the seasons of 2010-11 and 2012-13, Droylsden and Bradford City were initially disqualified, however, they were later reinstated following an appeal.

It is quite puzzling how this error could have occurred.

Although mistakes made by administrators in football are not uncommon, it is still puzzling why they occur. The frustration and shame experienced by the fans, especially those who attended the replay in Horsham, as well as some of the club officials, including the individual responsible for the error, are justifiable.

However, it should be acknowledged that Barnsley fully cooperated with the investigation conducted by the FA. They admitted their mistake and made a commitment to prevent similar errors from occurring in the future. There is not much more that can be expected in this situation. It is at least appreciable that everything unfolded in a timely manner.

Best wishes to Horsham as they face Sutton. There is a strong possibility that the victorious team will secure an exciting match in the third round of the FA Cup, which will inevitably attract criticism towards the Reds.
