Barnsley has been disqualified from the FA Cup due to their use of an ineligible player during their victory in the first-round replay against non-league Horsham.

The team from the seventh tier will be facing off against Sutton United from League Two in the second round.

The Tykes from League One emerged victorious in the replay match with a score of 3-0, following a 3-3 draw in the first match at Oakwell.

In a statement posted on the club's official website, they expressed their sincere apologies to their fans, players, and staff for the unfortunate mistake.

Barnsley has chosen not to disclose the identity of the player in question. However, according to the rules set by the Football Association, only those players who were eligible to participate in the first FA Cup match are allowed to

Aiden Marsh, a forward, had been temporarily playing for York City, a team in the National League. He was present during their first game on 3 November but was called back to his original team three days later. Marsh then began playing in the rematch that occurred in West Sussex on 14 November.

Barnsley's statement expressed that this mistake was unintentional but is considered a significant deviation from the high standards upheld by the club. They acknowledged that it is not what their supporters deserve.

"We have already completed a thorough internal inquiry and have subsequently implemented measures to guarantee that such an incident will not occur in the future."

Barnsley has the option to challenge the decision, but the Tykes have stated that they have agreed to accept it

As a result of the decision, Horsham, a team from the Isthmian League Premier Division, will be participating in the second round of the FA Cup for the second time in their history.

Kevin Borrett, the chairman of Horsham, expressed his satisfaction for his club's success while also expressing sympathy for Barnsley. He acknowledged the disappointment that Barnsley's supporters must be feeling and extended his best wishes to them.

Over the weekend, I had multiple discussions with the Barnsley chair as they were getting ready to respond to the FA charge.

"I believe that both clubs have had a great relationship throughout the two matches, and the fans have also found common ground on a few matters. There is a genuine connection between them."

He further stated that Sutton deserves credit as they are a formidable team, being a part of the league. Although we may be considered underdogs, we will approach the match with a mindset that victory is within our reach.

I believe Sutton will not underestimate the importance of this game.

In 2006, Bury became the most recent club to be expelled from the competition in the first-round stage or later. This happened because they fielded Stephen Turnbull, a player on loan from Hartlepool, without the necessary permission during a second-round replay match against Chester.

Chester was given back their previous status and ended up being defeated by Ipswich in a match that took place after a third-round replay.

Droylsden was excluded during the 2010-11 season, and Bradford City faced a similar situation in 2012-13. However, both teams successfully appealed and were granted permission to participate again.

It is quite puzzling how this error could have occurred, according to Andy Giddings from BBC Radio Sheffield.

Although administrative errors are not uncommon in football, it is still puzzling why they occur in the first place. The frustration and humiliation experienced by the fans, especially those who attended the replay in Horsham, as well as some club officials, including the person responsible for the mistake, can be easily understood.

However, it should be acknowledged that Barnsley cooperated with the FA's inquiry, took responsibility for their actions, and made a commitment to prevent similar errors in the future. There isn't much more they can do in this situation. The positive aspect is that the matter was resolved promptly.

I wish Horsham the best of luck in their match against Sutton. It is likely that the winner of this match will have the opportunity to play a highly anticipated match in the third round of the FA Cup, which may result in more criticism for the Reds.
