The UK government is still on track to abolish the lifetime allowance (LTA) for pension savings by April 6, 2024, as confirmed in official documents. The LTA is the maximum amount individuals can contribute to their pension pot without incurring tax charges. The announcement to remove the LTA was made during the Spring Budget. According to documents released alongside the Autumn Statement speech on November 22, the government plans to pass legislation in the Autumn Finance Bill 2023 to eliminate the lifetime allowance. This measure will also provide clarity on the taxation of lump sums and lump sum death benefits.
