Unearthed Interview Reveals Banksy’s First Name as Lawsuit Threatens to Expose His Full Identity

The elusive street artist Banksy has potentially had his true identity exposed in a recently discovered interview clip from 2003. This clip, which has resurfaced after many years, has the potential to reveal the artist's closely guarded secret. However, there is also a legal threat looming, as a

An interview that was previously unknown and believed to be lost, featuring the renowned street artist Banksy, has been discovered. This interview is particularly significant as it is the only known instance where Banksy reveals

In a recording from 2003, a BBC reporter conducts an interview with Banksy. During the interview, the reporter inquires about Banksy's real name, suggesting it might be "Robert Banks". In response, the artist discloses that his real name is actually "Robbie".

There has been ongoing speculation about the real identity of a street artist who is highly regarded and earns millions of dollars for their work. Their artwork can be seen on houses, in prestigious art galleries, and even on the Israeli West Bank barrier. Various individuals, such as Robert Del Naja from Massive Attack, Neil Buchanan from Art Attack, and Billy Gannon, a councillor from Pembroke Dock, have all been previously suspected of being the artist. In fact, the speculation became so intense that Gannon decided to resign from his position in 2022, attributing it to the constant rumors which hindered his ability to fulfill his responsibilities.

In 2008, the Daily Mail claimed to have identified Banksy as Robin Gunningham, a 34-year-old man who had attended a private school. However, Banksy himself denied this allegation. Currently, there is a lawsuit that could potentially reveal his true identity. The lawsuit has been filed by a company that accuses Banksy of causing significant harm to their reputation through a post on Instagram in 2022. In the post, Banksy wrote, "Attention all shoplifters. Please visit GUESS on Regent Street. They have taken my artwork without permission. Is it really wrong for you to do the same with their clothes?"

The recently discovered interview does not provide any evidence to convince people that Banksy is actually Gunningham. It is also significant because it is one of the earliest radio interviews with the street artist, who was in his twenties at the time and getting ready to debut his Banksy's Turf War exhibition in east London. In the interview, he addresses accusations of vandalism by saying that he has no intention of apologizing for it. He believes that it is a more efficient way of expressing one's opinion. He encourages others to go out and have fun by trashing things, as he believes that others have the power to change or remove the art if they desire.

You can listen to the complete interview on BBC Sounds in the most recent episode of Radio 4's The Banksy Story.

On 21 November 2023, an update was made to this article. In 2008, the Daily Mail claimed that Banksy's true identity was Robin Gunningham, not "Cunningham".
