West Bromwich Albion Ends Ipswich Town’s Unbeaten Run: A Championship Clash to Remember

Navigation shortcuts

West Bromwich Albion defeated Ipswich Town 2-0, putting an end to their long streak of being undefeated. The match took place on November 25, 2023, in the Championship division.

West Brom climbed back into the top six of the Championship after defeating Ipswich, which ended Ipswich's streak of 12 games without a loss in the league.

The team led by Kieran McKenna, who are aiming for promotion, had not lost a league match since 26 August, when they were defeated by Leeds. Darnell Furlong and Grady Diangana scored impressive goals, showing that West Bromwich Albion are known for being the top performers at home in the division over the last year.

The win also allowed Carlos Corberan's team to quickly recover from their first loss in five games, which occurred against Southampton before the international break. They were able to secure a spot in the play-off positions once again.

Furlong scored an early header to start off the scoring for the home team, followed by a fantastic counter-attack goal by Diangana in the second half to secure the win. This result marked Ipswich's first loss in an away league match since January.

The match showcased a strong home team facing a tough opponent on the road, with West Brom having the most points at home in the Championship over the past year under Corberan. Ipswich's last away loss in the league was against Oxford 10 months ago.

West Bromwich Albion quickly took the lead after Jed Wallace sent a great cross towards Brandon Thomas-Asante, who narrowly missed heading it into the goal.

After a corner kick, Matt Phillips passed the ball in a curve towards the near post, where Furlong jumped up and used his head to score a goal off the opposite post.

West Bromwich Albion came close to increasing their lead when Thomas-Asante's shot was saved by Ipswich goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky, but Ipswich managed to get back into the game as Wes Burns missed a scoring opportunity by shooting over the crossbar after Conor Chaplin's pass.

Ipswich put pressure on West Brom at the beginning of the second half, but they were surprised by a quick and effective counter-attack.

Conor Townsend calmly passed the ball from the back to Wallace, who quickly moved up the field and passed to Thomas-Asante. Thomas-Asante then passed the ball to Diangana, who scored a goal as the opposing team's defense rushed back to defend.

The game was effectively over as a competition, and the final score could have been even more one-sided if Phillips hadn't missed an easy opportunity.

Once more, Wallace was the one who set up the play, reaching the end line and passing the ball to the Scotland international who was just a few yards away from the goal. The Scotland international attempted to score with the outside of his right foot, but ended up sending the ball in the opposite direction, keeping Ipswich engaged in the game.

Despite their efforts, the Baggies were able to secure their fourth win in five games and move up to fifth place. Tottenham loanee Dane Scarlett almost caused some tension by narrowly missing a shot towards the end of normal time.

Carlos Corberan, the manager of West Brom, spoke to BBC Radio WM.

To achieve victory, it is essential to compete at a high level. The team currently in first place is there because they consistently perform well and pay attention to every detail that could affect the outcome.

Today, the team's victory was important to me because I witnessed each player performing exceptionally well throughout the game.

"We understood that it was important to be strong in both defense and offense today, especially when facing a team that has scored the most goals in the league. It was crucial to stay focused, not just when we didn't have possession, but also when we had the ball in order to make smart attacking moves and maintain control without giving it away easily."

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna spoke to BBC Radio Suffolk.

I believe we didn't give ourselves an opportunity to create a strong performance.

We give up the first corner that is awarded against us, which allows West Brom to feel more at ease in the first half. They are comfortable not having possession of the ball and focus on defending as a unit.

Our team was able to maintain control during the game and possess the ball for long periods of time, but our opponents proved to be very difficult to penetrate defensively.

"At halftime, we were prepared to make some adjustments, but unfortunately, the opposing team scored from our corner which made it challenging for us to come back against such a strong team."
